Tracability

Kidsonroof was created in 2005 by Romy Boesveldt (Netherlands) et Ilya Yashkin (Russia).  Ilya was trained as a designer in Moscow and in Amsterdam.   Kidsonroof's creations are simple but yet beautiful, ecological and learning toys.

Elisabeth VIdal, from Montpellier in France, is a designer and made Kidsonroof's cardboard furniture and some of their toys. 

Alex Hellum is also a designer.  He has been living in the UK for 20 years.  He designed Kidsonroof's cardboard horse. Youngest children will be delighted to hear a bell tinkling whenever they move the cardboard horse. 

Some of Kidsonroof's toys are made in China.  Is it very ecological?

Our mission and some facts:

• Kidsonroof stands for ‘back to nature’, beauty, creativity and an ecological approach for kids. That’s what we say, that’s how we think, and we live this vision through our design and manufacturing.
• Our paper products are manufactured in China – and sometimes customers wonder how this fits in with our vision. We appreciate this concern, and want to ensure that our customers feel confident in our products! Therefore we want to highlight some facts about our products and production methods.
• Our products are made from at minimum 80% post consumer waste. When possible, we use 100% recycled papers – In this way we help realize our goal of a sustainable future.
• All our paper products are tested and compliant to the European EN 71-73 safety norms as well as the US ASTM and new CPSIA standards. These standards were put in place for products marketed towards children, and ensure that they are 100% safe.
• All glue is 100% water based and also tested to be safe for children.

Our China Manufacturing

• Our manufacturing is done at factories that have strict regulations ensuring the safety and well-being of the workers. We guarantee that workers are treated fairly, work in a safe environment, and that no child labor is used. The quality control processes that have been put in place are based on Western standards – all locations are ISO9000 certified or above.
• Production in China allows us an enormous amount of flexibility – in most instances even more than working with European suppliers. Quick turnaround on samples and lower up front tooling and printing plate costs allow us to create many more designs than we would otherwise be able to offer. Kidsonroof is a small company – most of our products do not meet the huge production run standards that most European factories expect.

• Due to the incredible amount of hand labor involved in producing our products manufacturing in Europe just isn’t a feasible option. In order to realize our vision of creative and beautiful products that don’t strain the worlds resources or have prohibitive costs, we continue to produce in the most effective yet eco-friendly methods we can.

A World Economy

• We feel Kidsonroof is part of a world economy. Our designs are sold all over the (Western) world and our ambition is to offer kids throughout the world the possibility to play with our designs at an affordable price.
• Over the last few years China has gotten a bad image for their social, environmental and human rights standards. Although this image is to some extent deserved – we are confident that working in a controlled environment with the correct partners ensures that these are not issues that Kidsonroof or our customers need be worried about.

• We feel strongly that China has the right to develop as Western nations have in the past. We are working with our Chinese manufacturing to ensure that this is done in an ecological and humane way – the way that our customers would want.CO2 Footprint

• Because we deliver our products worldwide and not only to Europe, production in China does not increase our CO2 footprint. Manufacturing in Europe or the United States would lead to similar global shipments/CO2 emission.

Conclusion

We feel and live our ecological approach. Our products give children the
possibility to explore, learn, find new ways to create, with natural materials.
We will always need to search further for better and newer ways to manufacture
– and feel comfortable that our methods are in line with our vision for expanding
our children’s horizons and working towards an eco-friendly world.
